Garret Dillahunt stars every week in Fox's comedy Raising Hope playing Burt Chance. For those that have seen the show (and if you haven't you must!) would agree with me that Dillahunt is comedy gold, backed up with an insanely talented cast included Martha Plimpton, Cloris Leachman, Shannon Woodward and Lucas Neff.
Although Raising Hope doesn't go back into production until August (and will return in a new timeslot on Tuesdays at 8pm starting October 2), Garret is keeping busy in Louisiana filming 'Twelve Years A Slave,' opposite Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, and Paul Giamatti.
This is is the third film he has shot with Pitt - incuding 2007's The Assassination of Jesse James and a cameo in the upcoming Killing Them Softly (due in theatres in September). He also starred opposite Courteney Cox in her Lifetime movie she directed/starred in last weekend, TalHotBlonde. "I think it's pretty good. A lot of people didn't want to watch at first because it's a Lifetime movie. Things are as good as you make them. This was a really good stretch as a character. I had to transform myself as a completely different person and I enjoyed that. Courteney is great. She has great attention to detail. She worked her ass off on this. She can direct me anytime. I really think she did a great job."
He has also five other films in various stages of production, including Looper which will be released in September as well, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt. "It's such a great cast. I need to stop saying how lucky I am. There has to be a reason why I keep working with these great people. I am honored to be part of this. I got to work with Joseph and Emily almost exclusively. I couldn't ask for better co-stars. I wish I was that together when I was that young."
With all this action, and comedy, the missing piece to Dillahunt's career is a musical. "I think that would be a good challenge. I did a play one time in New York about country music in Missouri. I was the nasty Nashville influence taking over. The feeling of being in front of a band with a guitar is a really nice feeling."
Maybe time for a cameo on another FOX show, Glee? "I don't know how you would work me into Glee. I would be the oldest janitor ever to whip into a song." Or maybe a Raising Hope musical episode?
As for the next season of Raising Hope, he had an idea. "I think it might be fun if Virgina gets knocked up again and there is another baby. I think that would be funny, but they don't talk to us about the storyline. We're the last to know."
The show has a very loyal following, but gaining more viewers would be a nice accomplishment, says Dillahunt. "People think we are a show about a cute little baby and we watch the baby do cute little things. There have been imitators of our show since our show started. There's so much more that's going on in our show. People newly converted to the show are expecting something completely different which makes me believe we need to do a better job publicizing it."
As for the Emmys, when asked which clips he's submitting, Garret had no idea. "I don't know. Do I do that?" he laughs. "I don't know how all that stuff works. As long as I am working, I am doing pretty good. Winning an Emmy would be nice. It's a wonderful memory to have in your career. I think I work hard, but I really just want people to see the show and enjoy the show and keep working. I work more than anyone I know." Ain't that the truth.
We put together a few clips of some of our favorite Burt lines, speeches and moments from the past season. Enjoy.
