FIREFLY and Serenity actress Summer Glau might have her hands full with two young children, but it will not keep her away from her Perth fans.

The sci-fi celebrity will return to Australia as part of comic and gaming convention Supanova, which will be in Perth from June 22 to 24.

When Glau spoke with Community News from her Texas home, it was bedtime for her two daughters Milena and Isabou.

“It’s about 7pm, I’m putting my babies to bed,” she said.

“My first time in Australia I had a new baby, Milena; she is the older one and she came with me.”

This year Glau will have both her children in tow and is relishing the chance to explore new cities with them.

“One of my favourite things about conventions is the new places to go,” she said.

“Funny enough I got my first passport for a convention in England; I had never been overseas before.”

It seems sci-fi was destined to be Glau’s path in the entertainment industry.

“I have been a sci-fi fan since I was a little girl,” she said.

“I had health problems as a child; I had severe asthma and so I was home-schooled and we were always reading, my sisters and I.

“I loved sci-fi books (and) I think it had a hand in shaping my imagination.”

Glau said having a sense that she never fit in stayed with her when she went to Hollywood to pursue an acting career.

“When I first started acting, I had visions of being a period film actress like in Jane Austen adaptations,” she said.

“But I have always been different, I danced and was in a dream world, and I never fit in with my peers.

“And when I arrived in LA, I was still different.

“It was hard to fit into television and movies, so I think that is another reason why I got into sci-fi and why my connection with the characters was so unique.”

Glau said she would be keen to revisit the role that secured her place in conventions – the compassionate but lethal River Tam in short-lived cult favourite Firefly.

“Reboots are huge at the moment and I am often asked (about this) and I have been talking about it for so long, so I am surprised it hasn’t happened yet,” she said.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if it happened.

“Firefly was magic; we were able to make a movie out of a series that had hardly been on.

“I am so protective over what it was (but) of course if I was invited to do it I wouldn’t be able to resist.”
