You're playing Maggie in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. Scarlett Johansson is currently playing her on Broadway. What are your thoughts on that?
I read something saying Scarlett thought Maggie's sexiness was overly publicised in the past, and that's not something she wanted to go for in her performance. It's probably something that she doesn't have to work at anyway!
Do other performances influence your take on the role?
I've seen the movie and I don't think it had any positive or negative effect on me. I do remember Burl Ives as [the character] Big Daddy, though. I bought his songs for children to play for my daughter, but she just wants to listen to One Direction. She's 3½ and she's into Harry.
What can Aussie reworkings bring to classic theatre?
It's so accessible - we know our voice. There's just something really wonderful about being in an audience with someone speaking without a veil coming down.
Do you ever go back to NIDA?
I used to go back there a lot … I'd love to go out and do some screen-acting workshops and meet that burgeoning talent. There's a beautiful energy there.
What will you make a point of seeing this year?
I definitely still have to see Les Miserables. I actually sang with Hugh [Jackman] in a high school musical. I was at PLC and he was at Knox, and we did Brigadoon together, and he had the voice of an angel then. A very hot angel.
